What Goes Into a Concrete Driveway Pour

Three steps separate a driveway that lasts from one that doesn't.

    Demo and Prep

    Old asphalt or concrete gets broken out and hauled. The subgrade is graded and compacted. If drainage is a problem, and on Orange County lots with slopes and clay soil, it often is, we address it now, not after the pour.

  2. 02

    Base and Forms

    A proper gravel base goes down and gets compacted. Forms are set to control the finished grade and pitch. Every edge and expansion joint location gets planned before the truck shows up. This is where most shortcuts happen. We don't take them.

  3. 03

    Pour, Finish, and Cure

    Concrete goes in at the right slump, gets screeded level, and finished with the appropriate surface texture for traction and appearance. Control joints are cut to manage cracking. Curing is not rushed. We don't pull forms and walk away.

Broom-Finish Concrete

Pattern pressed into the surface while the concrete is wet. Can replicate stone, brick, or tile looks at a lower cost than the real material. More maintenance over time and more susceptible to surface wear than plain concrete.

When to Replace vs. Repair

Not every cracked driveway needs to come out. Hairline shrinkage cracks on an otherwise solid slab are cosmetic. A slab that's heaving, has settled sections, or is cracking because the base failed underneath it, that one needs to come out. Patching a slab with a bad base is money spent on something that won't last another winter in this climate. Honestly, if your driveway has more than a few isolated cracks and is over 20 years old, replacement usually makes more sense than repeated patching. We'll tell you which one your situation calls for when we look at it in person. We're not going to recommend a full tear-out if a targeted repair is the right answer.
